Resources class 8th

Q1. What are resources?

Answer:
All the things around us that are useful and fulfil our needs are called resources.

Q2. Why are resources unevenly distributed?

Answer:
Because every place has different climate, soil, height and temperature, so resources are not the same everywhere.

Q3. What are natural resources?

Answer:
Natural resources are those which come from nature like water, soil, minerals, trees and animals.

Q4. What are the two types of natural resources?

Answer:
Natural resources are of two types:

  1. Renewable – air, water
  2. Non-renewable – coal, petrol

Q5. What are human-made resources?

Answer:
Human-made resources are those which humans make like machines, roads, buildings, vehicles and technology.

Q6. What are human resources?

Answer:
Human resources are humans themselves — their knowledge, skills, education and abilities.

Q7. What are biotic and abiotic resources?

Answer:
Biotic resources are from living things like plants and animals.
Abiotic resources are from non-living things like soil, water and minerals.

Q8. What are actual resources?

Answer:
Actual resources are those whose quantity is known and are used right now.

Q9. What are potential resources?

Answer:
Potential resources are those which may be used in the future and are not used at present.

Q10. What is sustainable development?

Answer:
Sustainable development means using resources so that today’s needs are met and resources are saved for the future.

1. What are Resources? (Definition)

All the things around us that are useful and fulfil our needs are called resources.
Examples: water, soil, trees, minerals, machines, humans, etc.

2. Why are Resources Unevenly Distributed?

Because every place has different:
✔ Climate
✔ Soil
✔ Height
✔ Temperature
So, resources are not the same everywhere.

3. Major Types of Resources (3 Types)

(1) Natural Resources (Come from Nature)

Examples: water, soil, minerals, trees, animals
Two types:

  1. Renewable (can be replaced) – air, water
  2. Non-renewable (cannot be replaced quickly) – coal, petrol

(2) Human-made Resources

Made by humans
Examples: machines, roads, buildings, vehicles, technology

(3) Human Resources

Humans themselves
Human knowledge, skills, education, abilities
Humans use natural resources properly.

4. Biotic and Abiotic Resources

Biotic: From living things — plants, animals
Abiotic: From non-living things — soil, water, minerals

5. Actual and Potential Resources

Actual Resources:
– Quantity is known
– Used right now
Examples: petroleum of Gulf countries, coal of Jharkhand

Potential Resources:
– May be used in the future
– Not used at present
Examples: uranium in Ladakh, monazite in Kerala

6. Ubiquitous and Localised Resources

Ubiquitous: Found everywhere → air, sunlight
Localised: Found only in specific places → coal, iron, bauxite, monazite

7. Renewable and Non-renewable Resources

Renewable:
– Can be quickly replaced by nature
→ air, sunlight, water

Non-renewable:
– Once used, cannot be replaced soon
→ coal, petrol, natural gas

8. Resource Conservation

Using resources carefully and not wasting them is called resource conservation,
so that future generations can also use them.

9. Why is a Human Being a Resource?

Because humans can
✔ think
✔ learn
✔ create new technology
✔ use resources wisely

10. Sustainable Development

Using resources in such a way that
✔ today's needs are met
✔ resources are saved for the future

Includes:

  1. Protecting the environment
  2. Using resources properly
  3. Reducing pollution
